Do you Want a Beer With your ‘Narcocorrido’?

We have narco-corridos so why not narcocerveza?

My people (and by this I mean, Mexican people) have launched a new brand of beer called Malverde, after the famous saint patron of, well, drug-dealers. Malverde was actually appropriated by drug dealers, but it’s kind of a Robin Hood-type of hero from the North of Mexico.

The beer, which will only be sold in Culiacán and Guadalajara (for now) is produced by a local company, Minerva, which by the way has also launched The Simpsons-themed Duff beer.

My mom is from Sinaloa, so I’ve asked her to go hunting for some Malverde beer so I can soon report back on its taste.

Stay tuned, and ¡salud!

The Mother of All Mexican Holidays

December 12, 2007

While some marketers are already -and prematurely- preparing for the fake Hispanic holiday known as Cinco de Mayo, Mexicans get ready for their biggest, and by far most important celebration: Dec. 12 celebrates the Virgin of Guadalupe, who some 400-plus years ago appeared herself to Indian peasant Juan Diego.

Mexicans are already celebrating (members of my family are on puente, or long-weekend since Thursday), and everything is ready for tonight’s famous Mariachi-fueled singing of the mañanitas (Happy Birthday) at Mexico City’s main Guadalupe shrine.

So if you want to see some real Hispanic celebration (not the Doritos and guacamole type) tune in tonight for Univision’s live broadcast from the Basílica. You’ll see what I mean.

¡Felicidades Guadalupe!
